Everything & Nothing

Four figures stand at the water’s edge, their armour glinting in the morning sun. Drinking from the river beside them are their horses, each wearing different coloured saddles emblazoned with an elaborate coat of arms.

The green knight strokes his horse’s mane and whispers something in its ear, then unfastens the faceplate of his helmet and prepares to address the others.

“The hour is almost upon us gentlemen, and it is an honour to be entering the fray with each and every one of you. We know not what stands before us, or for what struggles we may have to overcome-”

“Chris mate, please.” The red knight interjects, rummaging within a satchel hanging from the side of his horse.

“The only struggle is working out how to piss in this thing.” The yellow knight says, hoisting up his tabard and chainmail and pulling at his breeches. He looks down to see what he’s doing only for his faceplate to clank shut in front of his eyes, leaving him none the wiser and now with a ringing in his ears.

The green knight is undeterred, pushing on with his intended speech.

“We remain stalwart in our bravery, we concede nothing to the interlopers-”

“Come on, we’ve talked about this already.” The red knight sighs, pulling his hand from the bag with a phone pinched between two metal clad fingers. “When we get the text, then you can start with that shit.”

The yellow knight stands beside the river to relieve himself, but before he can the blue knight taps his arm and points at the horses drinking from the water. The yellow knight’s shoulders slump and he waddles off towards the tree behind them, his armour still bunched up around his waist.

“Well, what’s the point in doing this if we’re not going to have fun with it!?” The green knight barks in a voice laced with frustration, though he receives no response from the other four, each preoccupied in their own separate way.

He closes his faceplate and returns to his place beside his horse, stroking its mane and whispering in its ear. “Well,” he says, his words muffled and tinny, “it appears that it rests upon our shoulders to make merry this morning.”
